CV checker
Free CV checker: a score out of 100 and what to fix
In the UK and Ireland it's a CV; in the US and Canada, a resume; Australia uses both. ResumePass checks either. Add your CV as a PDF or DOCX up to 5 MB, choose the closest of 15 industries, and get a free score out of 100, your strengths, areas to improve and specific suggestions. No account, no sign-up.
What the CV checker looks at
The score comes from fixed rules, so the same CV gets the same score every time:
- Contact details: an email address, a phone number and a LinkedIn link if you have one.
- Structure: experience, education and skills sections, and a short profile or summary. The check looks for words such as Profile or Summary, so a section called only Personal statement may not be picked up. Personal profile works.
- Length that suits your career level.
- Content: a range of action verbs, numbers that show results, and clear start and end dates.
- Education and certifications.
- Keywords for the industry you choose.
Date ranges count from a year to a year or to Present, with or without months: 2019 – 2022, Mar 2021 – Jun 2024, 03/2021 – 06/2024 and March 2021 – Present all work. A range of months with no year, as in May – June, doesn't count.
Our resume grader page explains how these parts add up to the score.
A note for UK and Irish CVs
Contact details, numbers and education are checked the same way for any CV in English, and the action-verb check counts British and US spellings alike: analysed and analyzed, organised and organized. The experience check finds UK and Irish headings such as Employment history and Career history, as well as Experience and Work history. Some industry keyword lists include US terms: the healthcare list includes HIPAA, for example. Treat a missing keyword as a prompt to check the job advert, not as a rule.
What to fix first
Start with the basics: the check can't read a scanned file with no text, and missing contact details or dates are quick to fix. Use plain headings such as Experience, Education and Skills. Then begin each bullet with what you did, and add a number where you can back it up. Run your CV through the free ATS resume checker again to see the effect of each change.
Checking your CV against a job advert
The free check doesn't read job adverts. The recruiter review does: you add the role and the job description, and it compares them with your CV. You get a verdict with a fit score, how you meet each main requirement, interview focus areas and a 90-day plan for your first months in the role. It is automated and written from a recruiter's point of view. It costs US$9.99, paid once, with no subscription. The price is in US dollars.
Questions
Is the CV checker free?
Yes. The score, strengths, areas to improve and suggestions are free, with no account and no sign-up.
Does a person read my CV?
No. The check is automated. The score comes from fixed rules, and our AI provider writes the suggestions.
Which file should I upload?
A PDF or DOCX up to 5 MB, with real text. A scanned CV is an image, and the check can't read it.
Does a good score mean I will be shortlisted?
No. The score shows how well your CV follows common ATS conventions. Results are guidance, not a guarantee.
